Lovely Loki
Everybody who meets Loki loves him. He is a very sweet, oversized pup who is very affectionate and loves cuddles. The person who transported him to kennels, who only met him once, said that he would remember him for the rest of his life. Yes, he really is that gorgeous.
So why has he come to us? Well Loki is a basically timid boy. He shows this behaviour in kennels and needs to be coaxed, quite often, until he can gain confidence. He is terrified of cars and needs to be lifted into one before he can be transported. He does then travel remarkably well. The key to understanding Loki is to remember his timidity, which his looks belie.
In his original home he was brought up in cramped conditions and he had to compete for attention and for toys. He is interested in toys, food, and an owner. His insecurity leads him to 'resource guard' all of these. The issue with food and toys can be managed easily enough with coping strategies. If adhered to initially, there should be no problem. The main issue is that he will guard his owner as well. He over-bonds with one person in a family and then guards his chosen one. In a normal family setting this could be dangerous.
So, we are looking for a single person prospective adopter for him. It would be best for Loki to be an only dog as well. He does get along with them and he has lived with several. But with Loki's behaviour traits, he could decide to guard his toys and it would be easy for things to escalate.
One can hope that this extreme behaviour would disappear once he is settled in his new home. There is no guarantee of this, as patterns can become established. But he is such a loving boy that there seems every hope that he will relax and, when more confident, will be able to let them go.
Like all Caucasians Loki has been bred to guard. Prospective adopters will need to bear their garden security in mind in order to keep him safe! Oddly enough, in his original home, he welcomed accepted visitors to the house and practically smothered our assessor with exuberant greetings. He is, of course, very immature and behaves like an overgrown puppy still.
So, we are looking for a home with a single owner. We would prefer him to have a country home with very secure boundaries. If he can be cared for intelligently, in order to give him time to settle and allow his insecurities to dissipate, he has the chance to grow into a uniquely loving (and very handsome) boy.
Who isn't tempted?
