Zoltan - Newport

Zoltan - Newport

This beautiful big boy is Zoltan who is a Caucasian Shepherd also known as Caucasian Ovtcharka, of approximately 2 years old who was abandoned in Cyprus. He is castrated and has his own passport.

It is thought that Zoltan must have come to Cyprus from a puppy mill farm based in Eastern Europe, but he was then discarded like a piece of trash. Maybe they didn't realise how big he would grow!

Zoltan was found chained up in an unfinished house with a bag of food next to him. He does not understand what has happened to him, he is missing his family and suffers in the kennels.

His stupid owner has also clipped his coat presumably thinking this would keep him cool when in fact it does the opposite. The temperatures in Cyprus however, are totally unsuitable for this breed of dog. Caucasians are flock guarders with strong guarding instincts, they are designed for being kept up in the mountains, protecting the flocks from wolves. They have heavy double coats for protecting them against extreme weather conditions.

Zoltan is underweight so needs to be built up and please remember that a male Caucasian weighs 55-70 Kg.

Zoltan or Zollie as he has been nicknamed just loves people and is very friendly, even with little kids. He is also great with other dogs but his rescuers have no idea about cats as there are none close by. He is just a big friendly lump who is in rescue through no fault of his own.

Because of his size and the type of dog he is, we think he would be better in a rural home and preferably somewhere with a very large garden or land.

GSDR have rehomed several of these dogs but this is not the breed for everyone so please research before applying.

SHOULD I own a Caucasian Ovtcharka?
