***A LOVELY STORY AND A BIT OF A CALL FOR HELP***
A long but worthwhile read... Please see if you can help, even if it's just to share his story...
So, for those of you unfamiliar with Timber, let me tell you about him. He came to rescue having been taught no boundaries as a pup and eventually became reactive to people and dogs to the point his owners grew fearful of him and so had him booked in to be PTS.... Enter GSDR! This poor boy has been in kennels for months now and kennel guards very badly. Not helpful for a reactive dog to be stuck in kennels and his behaviour has been so bad that not many people have braved handling him, save for a few of our lovely GSDR volunteers.
GSDR felt that having him castrated may help to calm him down... And so for the last couple of months, I have been slowly introducing him to Ruby so that he could have his nuts off and come to me for recovery and what a turn around! Too soon to be down to the castration but this boy has been so well behaved in my house. He's given kisses, had snuggles and walks nicely on lead with correction. To see this boy lay next to another dog like this is simply fantastic! He has even made some attempts to play with Ruby.
He's been less reactive out and about with both people and other dogs and does listen to vocal correction. Still a long way to go and by no means an easy dog. He has unfortunately had to go back into kennels as I've gone away with work and cannot take him (I've never felt so terrible).
So, the proof is that this boy needs to be in a home, out of kennels and worked on in order to give him the chance of being the dog that we are having a glimpse of right now. He's had his moments, don't get me wrong... We've played great fun games of "there's no way I'm having that cone back on my head" where he's gone a bit bonkers and he has attempted to mouth me but he's been manageable vocally.
Can anyone shout up to offer this lad an experienced foster home? He needs out of kennels but.....HE IS NOT EASY! Please do not offer help if you consider him a challenge and think you could work with him, he needs a strong vocal handler who sees him as a challenge and KNOWS they can work with him. He cannot go to anyone who believes that physically restraining or physically forcing him to do things will help as this stresses him and makes him more reactive. A lot of people have invested a lot of time in this dog in order to get him where he is now and we will not risk his progress being set back. He will only go to someone who knows what they are doing. Is that person you?
