Ronnie was taken to a vet to be PTS. The Vet called us about a GSD cross who needed our urgent help. But he looks like a Rottweiler! We have it on excellent authority from the vet that he is a GSD X and two of our volunteers who have spent some time with Ronnie vouch for it too! Face of a Rottie, body of a GSD – more importantly he is totally and utterly GORGEOUS!
Ronnie is currently in kennels.
Ronnie needs an experienced owner as he will pull on the lead if allowed and will need more training in this respect. But he is not aggressive towards other dogs or humans. He is something of a gentle giant. However, he is a dominant fellow so he will only be rehomed to an adult only household or one with older children. He needs a clear message that he is not the boss and that is most easily communicated with a single carer or at most two adult carers. It can work with very dog-aware older children. Certainly, Ronnie could relish this as he is playful and shows some energy despite his size.
Update 1 from Ronnie's Kennel Buddy:
I have been to Ronnie about 3 times this week. He walks well on the lead most of the time and is getting the idea that he goes where you want him to and not where he does. He is also learning that he is not the first one out of the gate but does need reminding at this time. He does not seem phased by other dogs, even the 'beserker-barkers'. We did some parade laps past the pens he was quite calm with no hackles raised.
In himself he has a strong personality but I see no malice in him and when he comes to pet he is quite gentle.
Update 2 from Ronnie's Kennel Buddy:
I took Ronnie to a Dog Show. He was admired by everyone and behaved impeccably. 'He had nose - to - nose contact with several dogs. He was snapped at by some of the smaller dogs, and did not retaliate. He took treats (supplied by me) from passers by who came to admire him and enjoyed being petted by all and sundry including children and some wheelchair occupants. Nothing seemed to faze him and he was gentle with all. He begged so prettily for an ice cream that he was given this free of charge by the man in the Ice Cream Van.
From one of our volunteers who met Ronnie at the above Dog Show:
It was a pleasure meeting this handsome boy.
I can't believe Ronnie has been in kennels for such a long time! He was so well behaved and did his handler proud. He met lots of dogs of all sizes including boisterous puppies and didn't put a foot wrong. No growling, no barking just a lot of interest in everything around him. He made friends with a GSD X Husky girl and looked like he wanted to play with her.
When I offered him the ice cream he licked it gently. I was impressed by his lovely manners! He enjoyed his ice cream but turned his nose up at the cone once all the icecream was gone (he is not stupid is he? )! Ha Ha!
I believe in the right home, with a good leader, Ronnie will be a wonderful companion.
