This magnificent boy is Paddy who is an entire 2-year-old male Caucasian Shepherd who is a fabulous example of the breed but is very laid back for a Caucasian. All credit to the owners for giving him such a good start.
Paddy lives in suburbia so has been well socialised from a puppy. Outside he is good with people and he is fantastic with children even visiting ones.
We don't know about cats.
Paddy does pull on the lead so new owners may have to think about using a Dogmatic head collar for walking him.
His owners let him off the lead, he will wander off and do his own thing but he has good recall which is unusual for a Caucasian.
On the day he was assessed it was too hot to take Paddy outside for a walk.
Inside the property, Paddy is very protective of the home especially the lady of the house but will accept people into the house if introduced outside before entering the property.
When our volunteer arrived, Paddy was out in the garden, he was let in, sniffed her feet and laid down beside her.
Whilst our volunteer was there, Paddy picked up some small Childs toys but he allowed the owners including their 11-year-old son, to remove them from his mouth with no fuss.
Paddy does have an issue with some men plus he has strong guarding instincts so we think he needs an experienced responsible owner to prevent these behaviours escalating.
Paddy likes to dig which is common with this breed as they usually dig to find a cool spot to lie in as they don't cope with excessive heat. He can also easily clear 5ft fencing so his new owners will need a secure area for him.
Our volunteer thought Paddy needed to put some weight on as he is narrow at the back end which in part could be due to lack of exercise. Caucasians are heavy dogs and quite low maintenance when it comes to exercise although they do still need regular walks.
Caucasians have a dense double coat which is high maintenance and they require regular grooming. Paddy doesn't like being bathed but he will tolerate it although it takes both owners to do it.
Paddy is being rehomed because his owners agree that he needs a bigger property and they would like him to go to a property with land or at least a very large secured garden where he can potter around to his heart's content.
Caucasians do prefer to be outside rather than being cooped up inside a house.
New owners should be aware that Caucasians have a very loud bark - one that would wake the dead!
This is a wonderful breed but they are not for everyone. We have put together further information on Caucasian Shepherds for anyone considering adopting one of these magnificent dogs.
