Update May 2020 - Max has been rehomed
Max is going to be a challenge. He had a bad experience as a youngster, when he was attacked, and this has made him fearful and wary of the world in general. His current owner is nervous of his subsequent fear aggression. She keeps him muzzled and on a lead and puts him away, at least initially, when visitors come to the house.
This is the classical catch 22 situation that arises with GSDs. The dog becomes scared and reactive and the owner becomes nervous of the consequences of this. Then the dog thinks that, if the owner is nervous, he really does need to be wary and all the more protective. This is a self perpetuating circle.
Max needs a confident owner who will not be challenged by his aggression when out. He then needs to face his fears incrementally, until he can stand more and more of normality. This can be handled, at least to a degree that will make Max a pleasant companion, though he might never quite achieve social catalyst status in doggy day care.
Max currently lives with another dog and a child. We believe that he needs to be in an adult only home and he is probably best also as an only dog, at least initially. He will need an owner who will give him the time and consistency and above all leadership. He will be a project, but so worthwhile.
Max is the man. He will be a super dog in the right hands.
