Nelson - South Yorks

Nelson, like many others has found himself in the rescue system through no fault of his own.  He is an incredibly bright and lively boy who is looking for an experienced home that can give him everything he so desperately needs.

Nelson was originally acquired for security at an industrial site but having not been such a good guard dog he was given up and taken on by someone who already owned dogs and who we can only imagine was hoping for a calm and well-adjusted dog.  But we know only too well that things very rarely go as smoothly as you’d like them to and Nelson, understandably could not cope with this new, alien environment that he had so abruptly found himself in.

He was not used to being confined in a house and having such close contact with people and other dogs and after a short time and him not getting along with the other dog, they decided that their home wasn’t right for Nelson and he was surrendered to rescue.

Since having Nelson at the centre we have all come to love him, but we have also seen how stressful things have been for him and how hard it has been to adjust to kennel life.  He is a high energy dog who is quite anxious and the two combined are a bad recipe when you are confined to a kennel and are used to so much freedom.  He is always so desperate to get out of his kennel, and being quite a clean boy he gets very frustrated when he needs the toilet and will often take out his frustration on his bedding if we can’t get him out soon enough.  He is a dog with so many positive attributes but they are all squished in this environment and kennel life brings the worst out in Nelson as it does with any dog.

Nelson is young and clever and there is plenty of time and opportunity for training and change but he needs someone who is going to be in it for the long haul and can give him 100% of their effort and commitment.  He needs someone who can make him think with plenty of enrichment and games and someone who can give him lots of exercise.  He is a friendly boy with everyone that he meets but he still struggles to relax fully and can be quite aloof when he is around people, but we think that with time he will build a strong bond with his new owner and that he will make a loyal companion.  Because he is not used to being in a home environment it will take him a while to settle down and there may be a few accidents along the way but we believe that perseverance will be key to success and somebody that isn’t too house proud is quite important.  We also need him to go to an adult only home with no other animals to give him the best chance of a forever home.

If you feel you can offer Nelson the time, breed knowledge and dedication that he needs and deserves then please give him a chance.

Our volunteer spent some time with Nelson at the kennels and this is what he had to say :

Nelson needs to be the only dog in the household. He is a lovely boy with a playful nature and will come to you for affection but not over needy. He’s still very young in his head and will need someone who can take it slowly to help him settle into living in a home. He tends to pick things up at of frustration but he’s not destructive in anyway.

Nelson is rough with other dogs and will need work on his doggie etiquette.Although he is good when out walking on the lead and doesn't show much interest in them. Overall Nelson is a lovely boy that just needs a chance an experienced Home is essential to ensure they know how to guide and support him into settling in to a loving home with his very own family.
