Marlis - West Yorks

Marlis - West Yorks

This beautiful young Caucasian pup is Marlis who is just 9 months old and is looking for a new home. These dogs are very big dogs, much bigger than a GSD and nothing like a GSD in temperament.

The Caucasian Ovcharka also known as Caucasian Shepherd or Russian Bear Dog is a relatively rare sight here in the UK. Their original purpose was protecting flocks from predators and thieves high up in the mountains but they have also been used by the Russian and German military and for bear hunting.

Caucasians always attract a lot of attention because of their striking appearance, size and outstanding work qualities. They are very big strong dogs and a male Caucasian will be 60 - 70 Kg and up to 28 inches in height.

This is not a breed for your average semi detached in suburbia as they need space and they generally prefer to be outside as they don't cope well with heat due to their very thick double coat. They are best suited to rural areas in a home with land or lots of space nearby where they can run freely.

This is not a breed for a novice dog owner as the Caucasian requires strong leadership with someone willing to give time to training and socialising. They also have a very strong guarding instinct with a very powerful urge to defend everyone and everything it regards as family. They should never be left alone with young children as they may feel the need to protect your child if play becomes too rough. They don't generally like strangers but will adore family and friends. In terms of maintenance they eat around 1kg of meat a day, require at least one long lead walk made to walk to heel and their coats require frequent brushing to avoid knots and remove dead hair.

The first Caucasian to come into the care of GSDR was Azer a very large young male who has been with us since October 2013. Fortunately, because he was a street dog he has been well socialised, loves people and is generally OK with other dogs although not keen on little yappy ones. Given the choice, he would sleep out at night but he has a bark that would wake the dead.

Caucasians seem to laze around a lot sleeping but don't be fooled as they are always on guard. Fencing will need to be much more robust than your average type and if you plan to take your Caucasian out in the car, you will need either a large estate, truck or 4x4.

As an owner of a Caucasian you must be a responsible owner and be conscious of the size of these dogs and what they are capable of if they are not handled properly. In the right hands they are very loyal rewarding companions but they are not really your average pet pooch.
