Volunteer report:
Please meet Khaos. This beautiful boy is a 10 month old entire male, short haired, sable, German Shepherd. He is a working line type GSD with all the brains and drive to go with it. He is looking for a new home as his current one cannot meet his needs. He is spending a significant amount of time outside in the garden with his indoor time mostly spent being crated. He is no longer tolerating the crate quite as well so his family are giving him as much outdoor time as they can.
Khaos is a very bouncy youngster who, due to lack of exercise and stimulation, gets over excited quickly. He currently lives with an 11 year old child but needs any children in the home to be big enough to manage him so we are looking for a home where any children are teenagers upwards.
He isn’t suitable to live with cats, he will chase and has harmed one previously. He shows high prey drive towards smaller animals so if there are chickens, rabbits etc in the home they will need to be kept separate from him.
Khaos is very intelligent. He learns quickly and because he hasn’t received the exercise and training needed for a dog of his type he has learned to make his own mischief. He is house trained but can be a bit of a bull in a china shop when indoors. He will need reintroducing to life inside with clear boundaries put in place and an owner conscious of keeping worktops clear of items that he might access. He will also need a fully secure garden with nothing he can climb on to get over the fence.
On meeting him he was very bouncy but sat nicely for me despite only meeting me moments earlier. He walks in a head collar that he does not really like, more work will be needed to get him comfortable if this is an item his new family choose to use. Despite not getting out for regular walks I found he walked ok on the lead and did not use his weight to pull me. He is car reactive and will need a home that can either drive him to quiet areas for walking while this is worked on or a rural home. He isn’t used to travelling in the car and does show some agitation but this is likely due to lack of experience. He ignored people walking by and enjoyed sniffing. He isn’t currently let off the lead as his recall is not great. He is so responsive to training that I’m sure this can be worked on using a long line.
He shows playful behaviour towards other dogs but is a big lad. He could possibly share his home with a similar sized female who can manage his boisterousness. He has shown some food guarding behaviours so toys and treats will need to be gradually introduced if he was to share his home. He would equally be just as happy as an only dog.
At the end of my visit he came over, sat on my feet and leant in to me for a cuddle. He is a really sweet lad who just needs a home that will make the most of his intelligence and give him a job to do. I’m sure he would excel at a dog sport as he is eager to please. He will be a bit of work to begin with but he will reward you massively with the dog he could turn into in the right hands.
