Let me introduce Keira who sadly has just spent her first christmas in kennels. She is a 7 month old GSD x pup who finds herself back in our care after a brief period in a home. We are unsure what has truly happened in the home as she shows some fearful behaviours she never did before, safe to say it’s a good thing she’s come back to us!
She is a beautiful girl with a clever brain that needs some guidance. She bonds very tightly and very quickly to her family which can lead to her feeling like she needs to protect them. She is nervous with strangers and needs support from a caring family to show her that she doesn’t need to be afraid for herself or for them.
She has shared with other dogs but shows possessive behaviour by placing herself in between “her” people and the resident dog. Sometimes this results in puppy licks as she tries to move them away but other times she is more determined, no injuries have come as a result of this though. This is something that can be worked on through management and reward based training however she would need someone willing to do this if she is to live with another dog. At other times she is great with dogs enjoying games of chase and getting up to usual puppy things.
She could live with a confident cat but again would need management to not let her puppy exuberance get too much. She will chase if they run but shows no malice in it, just typical puppy behaviour.
She is more suited to living with older children, teenagers and upwards or an adult only home due to her nervousness. She doesn’t show it around the home as she is happy with her family but is cautious when out and about.
Keira is housetrained and as long as she is given appropriate things to chew she will generally stick to toys rather than household objects! She will need work on teaching her to be left and also needs to learn that cars are good things, sadly I think cars have always signalled changes in her life so she is a bit wary of them.
Having spent time with Keira I can see a dog that would excel at having a job to do such as agility or scentwork. She is very intelligent and picks things up fast with a desire to please. She needs a home that is willing to take her out to socialise and teach her some life lessons she has sadly missed out on but she will give so much back in return. Please don’t let this beautiful girl languish in kennels longer than necessary.
