This beautiful big lad is our Jack who is a 4-year-old neutered male. He is a tall dog but a little skinny which is down to poor diet, he has not been fed quality food.
When our volunteer visited, he went into the house and Jack was let in from another room. Jack showed no aggression, just sniffed and was happy to be stroked.
This is another example of a dog who was acquired by an elderly person who could not cope with him or train him, so he was passed on to a second person who also could not cope with him. Then 3 months ago he was acquired by his last owner and guess what? They couldn't cope with him either. They have allowed him free run on their land which only has stock fencing which Jack was able to clear easily to gain access to the neighbouring farm and worry sheep. We had to get Jack out of this home as an emergency as the farmer was threatening to shoot him. So Jack is now in kennels.
Jack has never been trained to walk on a lead so pulls like a train and is very hard work because of his size. This dog has been allowed to do as he pleases so his new owner must be experienced and be prepared to go back to basics with his training and set Jack some boundaries. We don't believe he should be let off the lead but kept on a long line until he learns to do as he is told. He must not be allowed near livestock.
When our volunteer walked him out of the property, he was able to get him walking reasonably well on a slip lead. He did bark at a neighbour he could hear but not see but his tail was wagging. His owner states that once he gets to people he is fine.
Jack has lived with children as young as 3 with no problem.
Initially he barks at other dogs but once he meets them he wants to play. We think he could live with a nice laid back bitch but we think he would chase cats. We think being with another dog might help him overcome his issues and give him some stimulation.
Jack is lovely natured and a big boy but he does have some issues that need dealing with thanks to his previous owners.
With a bit of effort and patience Jack will be immensely rewarding.
