Baby Dougie ( Central Asian Shepherd Dog )

Dougie came to us last year after a Facebook appeal. He had been bought as a guard dog, but he was still a puppy. His guarding behaviour had not developed and so his then owners were going to have him PTS. He was rescued by another family, who had hoped to be able to keep him as a family pet. Sadly, predictably, this was not possible. Dougie is a big bouncing baby, and he is better with adults rather than small children and needs a certain amount of space, not a cluttered small home setting. So, Dougie came to us in kennels, where he immediately became a firm favourite with everyone. You can see in the main picture, he became the poster boy for the GSDR dogs in kennels.

These central Asian Shepherd Dogs, (also known as Alabais or Alabay) were bred to be pastoral guard dogs. As they live with their livestock, they tend to have steady natures and not to be energetic or need a massive amount of exercise. An ideal home for Dougie would be in the country with a large garden or land and very strong perimeter security. He has failed as a guard dog, once, but this trait will develop, when he is of an age and has his own home. In kennels, at the moment, he has no home and family to guard and so he is described as a 'baby in a giant body'.

He is very friendly with humans and is not excited by cats or dogs. He is curious and wants to play, that is all. He would be very manageable, if trained. He has no malice in him, although remember, he will begin to guard, once he has his own family.  

Are you intrigued to meet this adorable big baby? You will need to be an adult home only and be strong enough to withstand the early weeks of adjustment. When he is relaxed and with minimal training, this boy is likely to be one of the easiest dogs to manage that you could adopt. In the meantime, he will be a challenge but an adorable one.
